Our scriptures last Sunday focused on the many ways that God had planned the coming of Jesus – and brought those plans to pass. Have you ever thought about how much God was working behind the scenes to get things to happen just as He predicted. He had told Israel that their Messiah would be born in Bethlehem just as King David had been. Where was Joseph living? He was living in Nazareth! How would they get there? Why would they go there? Bethlehem was not an important city (financially or numerically). Bethlehem did not have deep spiritual significance like Jerusalem. So, what would cause a man and his 9 month pregnant wife to travel the 90 miles to such a town?
God used a decree from Caesar to bring Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. Humanly speaking, Joseph would have had no reason to go to Bethlehem. God, being God, got them there anyway. God used the world event from a pagan king to get them where He wanted them.
What about you and I? Do we see God at work in our days? Do we see Him working and changing the world around us? My guess is, we probably think that this world is largely out of control. We think that things are going nuts. Maybe being reminded that God does work in world events – even those that appear to be out of control – will help us know that God is at work in our life even when our life is out of control.
Something to think about,
Pastor John
