What makes a sacrifice acceptable to God? In the Old Testament a sacrifice was of an animal of accepted type without blemish or defect. Although there were allowances for the extremely poor, God was very strict about what type of sacrifices He would receive. It all came back to holiness. Sacrifices were to be holy (special and without defect) because God is holy. That is the only type of sacrifice that God ever accepted in the Bible. In his first letter, Peter says that we get to offer that type of sacrifice to God. We get to offer a sacrifice that God accepts!
