Jessi and I have been having some fun bridges experiences lately. When we crossed the one-mile bridge to Pella, we both have a bit of a fear of that bridge. Jessi has a fear of heights, and I just have a fear of rickety bridges and don’t know how to swim. So, before we started to cross the bridge, we made up a game to make it fun. We started yelling like we were in Home Alone or something. Jessi thought it was great fun, and the experience was catching. Every bridge we crossed after that, on our way to Oskaloosa, no matter how big or how small, Jessi would start the game, and we had a great time. I realized that by ‘building that bridge’ with Jessi by turning it into a fun experience, that the fear factor was gone!

Then today, we encountered a different type of bridge building. As we went to drop off some supplies at the coffee shop after church, there was a group of doubles on 3 motorcycles having fun on the square. They cranked up their music, and it was good music, very catchy. They roared around and around in a circle in front of the shop on that side. Jessi and I stopped and grinned and just watched. Jessi said, “Vroom, vroom” and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. We went into the shop, put our supplies away and came back out. There they all 3 were, parked in the spot behind my car, just sitting there smiling, revving their engines and videotaping us! It was a little unnerving to say the least, so we just smiled back. Then they drove off. However, we had made a connection with them, even if we didn’t get a chance to talk or anything. That’s what I thought of when I read this today. We built a bridge with them! We must have looked silly, me in my dress, and holding hands with Jessi, but they seemed interested in that connection with us anyway. It was amazing and so unlikely.

I will remember that and this email from you as I think on building bridges with people before we go work at the coffee shop again tonight.

    Thank you,

    Annette
